What is Being Checked in a Background Check

Everyone knows what a background check is. But do you know what it actually entails? Do you know what is being “checked”?

First of all, the report is based on criteria that is set by a prospective [or current] employer. For example, the criteria set on a background check for a potential teacher will be very different than one for a construction worker. Based on the position of the applicant, the background check requested will have different conditions that will be verified or checked.

What exactly is being checked?

Most people think it’s a simple criminal history check – but it is much more than that. While background checks do include criminal records, it can also check education, employment history, credit history, civil records, motor vehicle and license records, references and more.

As an applicant, if you are unsure on what type of report is being done, you can ask for clarification from the organization who is requesting the background check, so that you can understand what specific searches are being requested.

Why Is a Background Check so Detailed?

The purpose of a background check is to ensure that applicants do what they claim they can do, through employment and education verification. It verifies that applicants are who they claim to be and ultimately, help protect the company, employees and clients.

Is there Protection for the Applicant?

Remember that any background screening company must comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a federal legislation implemented to ensure fairness, accuracy and privacy of consumer information found in the files of consumer reporting agencies. And the employers are also responsible to comply with the FCRA, when making any hiring decisions based on the results from the report.

In addition, each background screening company should be familiar with the laws of their state and municipality in regards to background reports. Some states and municipalities have different regulations regarding the use of background information for employment purposes.
